The term nutraceutical is a blending of the words “nutrition” and “pharmaceuticals”. In 1989, Dr. Stephen DeFelice was credited with defining the term nutraceuticals as “a food (or part of a food) that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and/or treatment of a disease”.
The term nutraceuticals doesn’t have any regulatory standing, and is a form of vitamin supplementation. It is used more in marketing terms to highlight ingredients within a product that have medicinal benefits for long-term health.
Food scientists have conducted new research that shows there is more to food science than what was understood only a few years ago. In the past, analysis of food covered the flavor and texture of food and it’s nutritional value, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, water and minerals. Food scientists today offer increasing evidence that other components of food play a fundamental role in the link between food and health. Probiotics, antioxidants and phytochemicals are some of the chemicals found in food that are effective in providing protection against chronic disease.
