Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) dates back to Japan in 1978 by physicians to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis. The benefits of WBC have been studied and refined in Europe over two decades, particularly by the Olympic team physicians from Poland to reduce muscle recovery time, pain and inflammation in their athletes. The treatment is 100% natural and safe when administered by physician, nurse, chiropractor, certified athletic trainer, physical therapist, or certified cryotherapy technician (offered by iCRYO enterprises, Mr. Kyle W. Jones).
The cryosauna uses a non-toxic, natural gas called nitrogen gas to reduce the skin surface temperature from the normal body temperature 30 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 seconds or less for 3 minutes. This dry cold stimulates the thermal cells in our skin and sends a message to the brain that act as a stimulant to all regulatory functions of the body. The treatment process is painless but your body will feel cold and your face will be visible to the operator during the procedure. The cold does not penetrate the tissues like an ice bath does because it is a dry cold unlike the moist cold produced from an ice bath. The body pulls the blood away from the extremities and into the core, therefore the extremities must be protected with dry gloves/socks. The vessels around the core then constrict, holding the blood in the core, the body begins working to protect and boost the vital organs producing and releasing nutrients into the blood. This is the reason many people notice very little discomfort in their chest, stomach and spinal area. Additionally, the body is producing heat to protect the core. Remember, it takes only three minutes to trigger the body responses to stimulate the healing process. The treatment effect has been reported to work for 3 to 7 days, and reported to improve the body healing process approximately 50%.
Once the cryotherapy treatment commence the body will produce physiological functions such as increase in endorphins which are hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system having several physiological functions. These endogenous opioid neuropeptides help us feel energetic, and activate the body’s opiate receptors causing an analgesic effect, therefore reduction of pain and inflammation. A neuro-hormone called Serotonin found in the brain, bowels, and platelets is also increased. Serotonin is regarded as a chemical that carries signals along and between nerves and responsible for maintaining mood balance, social behavior, appetite, digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire and function. The patient’s metabolism is reset which results in an increase of the metabolic rate, ultimately, burning up to 500 to 800 calorie up to 6 to 8 hours after each treatment. The benefit to the skin is the reduction of cellulite that improves skin tightening. The internal body temperature is raised for a short period of time and causes stimulation of the immune system which help decrease the severity and frequency of the flu virus and colds.
Whole Body Cryotherapy is ideal for professional sports athletes, fitness participants, individuals undergoing medical care, post-injury, post-surgical rehabilitation, occupational health care, mental health care, and skin health. Currently, WBC is under investigation for used by physicians who perform stem cell therapy.
The contraindications to WBC include: Stage II Hypertension (BP 160/100) because fluctuations in blood pressure during the therapy only up to 10 points, Myocardial infraction (acute, recent), unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, allergy history to cold or active cold sores due to immune system stimulation, renal disease, urinary tract diseases. Our cryotherapy unit will accommodate a patient up to 450 pounds.
Currently, there are no standardized treatment protocol(s) for WBC. However, it is medically reasonable to take a comprehensive medical history, and vital signs for all new patients including skin temperature before entering and exiting the cryosauna unit to establish the skin temperature decrease of 30 degrees for therapeutic effectiveness. In an established patient the medical history should be updated particularly in a change of blood pressure, cardiovascular function, kidney function, spinal injury, or musculoskeletal injury. Thus, consult with your medical director before the operator commence treatment.
The WBC therapy protocols at iCryo enterprises are patient specific. Upon the completion of the first session it is highly recommended to have at least 5 – 10 sessions within the next 2 weeks. Based off the benefits after the first 10 sessions, a customized treatment protocol is developed for each patient. Additionally, we recommend Normatech Compression therapy to help with lactic acid reduction and muscle recovery of the lower extremities particularly for athletic patients.
Remember, we use certified operators trained by our experienced head trainer/coach, and two-time USAPL National Power Lifting Champion, Kyle W. Jones, complemented by physician and chiropractor advisory board oversight.
It is our goal to “champion” the quality process improvement; clinical safety & effectiveness as well as perform clinical trials research for the advancement of biological science using evidence-based medicine treatment protocols that are FDA approved.
