Synthetic Hormone Replacement Therapy

Synthetics - Hormone Replacement Therapy of the Past
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been around for years. Traditionally, women going through the menopausal transition have been treated with synthetic hormones such as Premarin, Prempro or Provera created by large pharmaceutical companies. Synthetic hormones are hormones that have been modified in some way (different in chemical structure from hormones produced by the human body) or have been isolated from another animal species, for example, from the pregnant mare’s urine. Synthetic hormones are foreign to the human body and can have negative side effects. Conversely, bioidentical hormones are identical to what the human body produces and have few side effects.

What are the risks associated with taking synthetic hormones?
According to the FDA, for some women, hormone therapy may increase the chances of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes breast cancer and gall bladder disease. For women who have not had their uterus removed, estrogen increases their chance of getting endometrial cancer. Adding progestin, however, lowers this risk.

The evolution of treatment with hormone replacement therapy has been much slower in its progress than it really deserves. Women have a good 30 years of life after menopause, and the quality of that life should be optimized. In the past, the approach to sex hormone replacement was based mostly on maintenance of bone mineral content to prevent or slow down the development of osteoporosis. Many women do not realize that menopause is really a transition that spans about 30 years. It does not begin at 50; it begins at about 35 and does not stop until you are about 65. It takes that long for the brain and tissues to adjust to first fluctuating and then decreasing estrogen levels. For men, andropause symptoms are less obvious but men do have hormone deficiencies starting as early as their 30's.
You may be asking why do doctor's use synthetic hormones instead of the safer alternative, bioidentical hormones. There is a simple answer. Mainly, conventional doctors aren't aware of BHRT. Most conventional doctors learn about medications through medical journals which are published by large pharmaceutical companies. Pharmaceutical companies create synthetic hormones because the synthetic hormones are chemically altered and their structures are unique which makes them patentable. Bioidentical hormones aren't patentable because they are in their natural form; thus pharmaceutical companies can't earn large profits and don't do studies on them.

Today, there is a real solution to women’s and men’s hormonal imbalances. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is safe, effective and will bring back women and men's vitality, vigor and physiological state of their 30's.
